And Ya Cross-Over, 2022
Dimensions of each print:
Exploring spaces informed this series of prints, which are based on various paths around College Hill. Sometimes I find the path exciting because of where I am headed — swing dancing, for instance. At other times, like when I am passing through Market Square and look toward the misty skyline, it is as if the space invites me in to reveal what’s there and what has gone on before. And then, there are times I can share my favorite spaces as a tour guide on RISD admissions tours. During my creative process, I find that my perceptions of everyday, ordinary events intertwine with both what I am currently learning and my previous experiences to emerge as something unique. When I allow myself to ruminate and delve into the archive of my past, I feel I can almost suspend the ordinary and translate it into an artifact with its own rich history and even its own movement in time. One Saturday morning, a foggy campus offered itself, diffused light blurring the edges of the landmarks I normally use to navigate. The mist, like emotions bubbling up and blurring boundaries between the physical and the imaginary, seemed to reveal a magic embedded in space which is usually hidden. I strived to recreate that captivating mist in each print in this series by working with ghost-like resists that naturally occur during screen printing. Using a transparent base and silver ink, I integrated the masking as a part of the process. Each successive print reveals more masking. In the final print, the resists take over, yielding an ethereal silvery fog which truly reflects the spirit of my adventure.
