Statement from group show, In The Palms of Our Hands:
Unearthing fragments of memories, small moments from one’s daily life, what was once present becomes a memory. I spent the summer digging and planting a garden in my backyard. In a sandbox buried beneath the foundation of an old shed, I discovered unexpected stories. As I worked, I uncovered small bits of someone’s past: A blue marble, a toy truck, a toy soldier, sherds of pottery, and a poker chip. Although they are fragments, these objects evoke a child’s imagination. Picking up, holding these small toys, I could just picture children playing. I found that recognizing their imagination sparked my own. The spirit of our stories can be contagious. There’s power in art, in playfulness, where you can’t help but be transported into the way a creator was thinking.
These copper sherds reflect my daily experiences and what I’m imagining, here and now: Visiting the Providence Athenaeum, drawing at the greenhouse, and sitting in my kitchen, enjoying the view. These sherds are not only objects that can be held and appreciated, transported, buried and unearthed, but also they can be inked and printed as intaglio printmaking plates.
